On September 22, Notion permanently shut down Notion Mail, the database-style email client it built on top of Gmail — the shutdown had been announced back in June. The reason the company gave: users prefer to hand email off to an AI agent rather than open their inbox themselves. The emails themselves stay put in each user's Gmail account — what disappears are the custom inbox views, AI-generated labels, saved snippets, and notification settings built inside Notion.
Why it matters for a small business
If you build an important workflow on a layer added on top of a base service — here, an email client sitting on top of Gmail — that layer can disappear even while the base service keeps working fine. The customization you built inside it, though, does not survive.
Before you move something essential — invoicing, customer support, scheduling — into a new and less established tool, it's worth asking what happens to your data if the provider shuts it down, and exporting what you can, regularly, from the tools you already rely on.
